The New York State Department of Financial Services has released its most recent survey of the most complained about insurance carriers in the State of New York.
The complaint data ranks all 169 automobile insurance companies doing business in the State of New York based upon a complaint ratio taking into account the size of the insurance carrier and its premium volume.The findings do not include complaints against insurance carriers that are not upheld by the Department of Financial Services or that are withdrawn by the consumer.
The best performers of 2014 (remember, the data released by New York State reflects 2014 complaints and more current data is not yet available to the public) was a tie for first (best) between Progressive Max and Allmerica Financial Alliance insurance companies. Also, ranking high in the list of best performers was Chubb National & Travelers Commercial insurance companies. The highest number of complaints made against any insurance carrier, irrespective of size, was against Country-Wide Insurance Company, which receiving 327 complaints in 2014, with 59 of them upheld as valid. The worst overall performer of 2014 was New Hampshire Insurance Company, a small carrier which received 10 complaints, with six of those 10 complaints upheld as valid.
The largest insurers in New York, like GEICO General, GEICO Indemnity, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance, Allstate, Liberty Mutual Fire and Progressive Insurance Company, all were ranked in the middle to the lower half of the pack in terms of complaints on the worst performers list for 2014.
